Safe Environment: Diocesan Policies for All Who Serve in Ministry

We welcome your service in our thriving parish!  Through our 100+ ministries, these ministries enable us to fulfill our parish vision to worship, serve and grow.  The Diocese of Charlotte has adopted policies and procedures to safeguard those whose care has been entrusted to us. 

Forms, policies and information required for all volunteers at St. Gabriel can be found below.


Important:  Read this first!

  • Recommended:  Set up an account at VIRTUS.ORG and complete most  of the required items below online.   Print and  follow these instructions.   See below to determine which forms you need to complete. 
     
  • Prefer to complete forms on paper?  See instructions below for printing each form.  Copies may also be obtained from the church office front desk during business hours.

Forms to Complete

1.  EVERYONE: Print, complete and return our Volunteer Profile Form - on paper only.

2.  EVERYONE: Complete the Background Check Release Form (must be renewed every 5 years).  Two options:

Complete and sumbit on-line at http://www.virtus.org (recommended).  

OR

Print and return completed form to the church office.

3.  EVERYONE:  Read and acknowledge these diocesan policies:  Policy of the Diocese of Charlotte Concerning Ministry Related Sexual Misconduct by Church Personnel and Diocese of Charlotte Code of Ethics Forms.  Two options:

Read and sign off on-line at http://www.virtus.org 

OR

Read, print and return completed acknowledge to church office.

4.  MOST VOLUNTEERS:   Take the Protecting God's Children training.  If your ministry involves children or vulnerable adults, you must complete this one-time training prior to volunteering. Once you have completed the training, provide a copy of your certificate of completion or the year and location where you attended class.   Two options for this one-time training:

RECOMMENDED:  Complete the training at St. Gabriel or another local parish.

Important:  Keep your certification current by completing the monthly Virtus "bulletin" quizzes and annual re-certification quiz you'll receive by email.  See details here.

 

5.  SOME VOLUNTEERS:   Complete the Approved Driver Status Form:  Applies only to designated ministries.  Only volunteers who drive on behalf of designated St. Gabriel Ministries (more than one time per month) must complete and submit this form.  This does not include driving to and from church.  Must also submit a copy of driver's license and proof of insurance.   A current motor vehicle records check will be performed by the Diocese.

Submitting Completed Forms
 

Completed and signed forms should be returned to the church office in a sealed envelope to the receptionist at the reception desk (Ministry Center - 3rd floor) or mailed to: St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.  Include the name of the ministry on the envelope.  Forms can also be emailed to Linda Adams at ladams@stgabrielchurch.org  All information provided is kept strictly confidential. Remaining Compliant with Diocesan SAFE Environment Requirements
 

As part of the Safe Environment program within the Diocese of Charlotte, all volunteers are required to have a current background check on file and complete the Protecting God’s Children training, if they serve children or vulnerable adults.  Once these two requirements are met, it is an individual’s responsibility to keep up to date with Virtus continuing training.  This includes online re-certifications (assigned annually for the first 4 years after completing the Protecting God’s Children training) and monthly Virtus bulletins (reminders emailed to active Virtus account holders). 

Below are instructions as to how you can access the bulletins and the recertification courses. 

To Access Virtus Online Bulletins

  • Login to your account at virtusonline.org
  • Click on the “Training” tab
  • On the right hand side under the Training Bulletin Report box, click on "Click here to see your complete report"
  • Under training bulletins click on "Click here for details".  It will then show you all the bulletins that are not currently read.
  • Click on each of the articles that are not yet complete, read the article and submit your answer to the question, and then the bulletin will show as complete

To Access the Annual Recertification Courses

  • Login to your account at virtusonline.org
  • Click on the “Training” tab
  • On the left hand side under Online Training Modules, click on "Recertification"
  • Any assigned recertification courses will be found here – click on it to begin
