MONTH 1:  CREATION

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Our creation story teaches us that God created us and like all His creation: we are good.  We learn there is suffering in the world because we are separated from God by our choice.  God gave us the gift of Free Will- this means we can choose to sin.
  • The creation story is a poetic way of explaining that God made everything out of nothing.  It is not a science book - but helps us see the fundamental truths about our relationship with Our Creator.

Sing along with "Jesus Loves Me" and talk about what it means:  listen here

Activity 2:  Older grades

Read one of the stories of creation in Genesis 1:1 – 2:3 or Genesis 2:4-25.   Fun challenge:  Read both creation stories and discuss the differences.  Hint: Story one is about God creating 3 “rooms” and then 3 “inhabitants” for those rooms and finally resting on the Sabbath.  Story two focuses on the pinnacle of creation – humanity and the first family.

Activity 2:  Younger grades

Get to know your Bible:

  • What is the Bible? The Bible is the collection of scriptures (the Word of God) that have been passed down to us with the help of the Holy Spirit and guarded by the Church.
  • Look at your Bible.  Does your Bible have pictures? Is it long or short? Look at your family’s Bible.  What are some of the differences?

Activity 2:  Older grades

Get to know your Bible:

  • The Bible contains the TRUTH that God wants us to know.  What is the difference between “fact” and “truth”?
  • The Bible is not a science book but is full of stories that teach us lessons. What do we learn from allegories?
  •  It’s a BIG collection that has two major parts called Testaments.  The Old and the New Testaments. Within these, there are lots of books.  46 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.  Which part, book or passage are you most familiar with?
