Come Holy Spirit, come!

for Parishioners of St. Gabriel Catholic Church

Dear families,
Our 9th grade Confirmation preparation will begin late September 2020 for students who are St. Gabriel parishioners and meet eligibility requirements (see below).   This program is also for high school teens who have not received any sacraments (Rite of Christian Initiation for Teens).

In Confirmation, the baptized person is "sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Confirmation deepens our baptismal life, which calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. (USCCB)

THANK YOU FOR BEING BE PATIENT WITH US AS WE EVALUATE AND ADJUST PLANS IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19.   As teens prepare for Confirmation, we want them to feel welcomed, encouraged, and challenged to grow in faith in a non-judgmental environment.   At the end, we hope each candidate will have an open heart to the sacramental grace received in Confirmation, have an understanding of the basic teachings of our Catholic fatih, and become a disciple of Christ, led by the Holy Spirit.

Important information about Confirmation preparation is provided below.  We look forward to helping your students prepare for this beautiful sacrament!  Check out our FAQs.

Peace in Christ Jesus,

Adrian Quintero

Who can be a sponsor?   A sponsor must be a faithful, practicing, confirmed, and mature Catholic, who is at least 16 years of age, and is in good standing with the Church.  According to Canon Law, parents cannot serve as a sponsor for their child.

Need help choosing a sponsor?   Candidates may use this online worksheet to assist them in identifying an individual that meets the above requirements and would be a good choice as a spiritual mentor who is willing to share his/her faith.

Sponsors must complete these:

1.  Complete the online Sponsor Agreement Form by January 15

2.  Download the Sponsor Eligibility Form, for completion by the sponsor's parish, and return to St. Gabriel Catholic Church per instructions on the form by January 15.

Saint Reflection Paper:  Due January 15 through online form

Each candidate must complete a 250 to 300 word reflection paper on the life of a saint. Traditionally, the candidate takes the name of the saint for their confirmation name. This name is used by the bishop during the Rite of Confirmation.

PLEASE USE THIS ONLINE FORM for more information and to submit your reflection paper.

Due January 15, 2021.

Service to Others

Each candidate is asked to participate in three service opportunities during the course of the confirmation process. Service to others is an integral part of our call to live out our Catholic faith.

Pray and reflect on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy to help you determine the types of service you are being called to be active in. Remember, service is less about you and more about Christ and our neighbor.

Please complete the online Works of Mercy Form for each service opportunity you participate in. A list of examples of service is available on the Confirmation Forms section of the website.

REQUIRED Weekend Confirmation Retreat:  April 23-25, 2021

Each candidate is required to attend the weekend retreat April 23-25, 2021 at Camp Caraway, 4756 Caraway Mountain Rd, Sophia, NC 27350.  Mark your calendars!

Registration information for the retreat will be emailed January 2021.  There is a separate cost for the retreat, amount to-be-determined.

The retreat is an important component of the confirmation process and a highlight for the youth, giving them an opportunity to follow the example of the Apostles (Acts 2:42).  The weekend retreat will go over specific Confirmation content and it is imperative that ALL candidates plan to attend.

Confirmation Preparation FAQs

  1. Is the Confirmation Weekend Retreat still required due to COVID-19? We understand the uncertainly of where we will be in April 2021 based on COVID-19, but for now we will keep the retreat as part of the confirmation process that all candidates are asked to participate. In the event that it is not possible to have a weekend retreat due to COVID-19, we will provide an alternative.
  2. Do the service hours my teen completed this past summer fulfill the service project requirement for confirmation? We will honor service hours completed based on the previous model for this year. The most important aspect of service is not an accumulation of hours but the participation in loving others through our service and the development of a servant heart.
  3. When will the confirmation Masses take place at St. Gabriel? Each year the Bishop's Office schedules and publishes confirmation dates for each parish. Traditionally, the notification of the dates have taken place sometime in January/February 2021. We will notify all families as soon as we receive St. Gabriel dates for confimation.
  4. Will there be a Zoom option for Confirmation preparation? We are offering two different options for the confirmation process, an on-campus (St. Gabriel school cafeteria) and in-home small group. Please contact Adrian Quintero by email if you have any questions or concerns due to COVID-19.
  5. Based on the two-year faith formation requirement to receive a sacrament, is my teen required to attend 8th grade faith formation this year due to COVID-19? We are providing an in-person youth ministry model of faith formation for 7th and 8th grade beginning in October on Wednesday evenings, 6pm to 7:30pm. We ask that teens in 8th grade participate a minimum of once-a-month to fulfill the first-year requirement of faith formation for the diocese. If you have concerns due to COVID-19, then please contat Adrian Quintero at
  6. My teen is in the confirmation process, can my teen participate in the high school youth group even though they haven't been confirmed? Absolutely! All St. Gabriel high school teens are invited and encouraged to belong to the youth group that means Sunday evenings after the Sunday 5pm Mass at the St. Gabriel School.
