Outreach Opportunities

June 24 - July 8:  Freedom School
Freedom School provides 6 weeks of summer literacy and character building programs and meals for disadvantaged children.  Program is held at the Oakhurst STEAM Academy on Monroe Rd.  Opportunities include:

  • Share a hobby/skill/passion with a class (great for those who speak Spanish). Contact Laura Hull  at ehull@carolina.rr.com
  • Spend 30 minutes reading to a group. Contact Chris Ryskiewich at cryskiewich@carolina.rr.com
  • *Host a lemonade stand, bake sale, to help another child participate in Freedom School.
  • *Host a toy drive collection for new or used Legos or K'nex for program.  
  • *Assemble 3 weeks worth of appreciation tokens (notes, homemade desserts, etc) for 7 staff.  Contact Laura Hull at ehull@carolina.rr.com

July 9:  Habitat for Humanity
Assist with building homes.  Work available for all skill levles, no experience necessary.  Must be 16 years old.  Other volunteer opportunities available serving lunches. Contact Danny Kelly at dkelly@kellymcardle.com

July 16:  HOM
Assist with furniture pick-ups to furnish apartments for the homeless.  Contact HOMfurniture.donate@gmail.com

July 27:  HOM
Assist with organizing the storage house and setting up apartments.  Contact HOMfurniture.donate@gmail.com

July 30:  Men's Uptown Homeless Shelter
Prepare and serve dinner to the residents. Contact wpenilla@aol.com

*On-going:  Levine & Dickson Hospice House - Snack Collection
Help stock the pantry with nonperishable snacks for family members and patients.  Individually wrapped granola bars, trail mix, cookies, crackers, juice boxes, pretzels, are needed (preferably in bulk). Contact Meagan Quinlan at meagsgq@gmail.com

On-going: Friendship Trays                              Deliver meals to the homebound.  Individual drives one week-day per month at lunchtime, sometimes with a partner.  Substitute drivers are always needed.  Contact Carla Lewis at  cblewisnc@yahoo.com

St. Gabriel Church is committe to thithing a minimum of 10% of our Offertory.  The list below represents some of the organizations that have received our tithing funds or benefit as an outreach ministry .  These organizations offer volunteer opportunties.  Visit their websites to learn more. Baby Bundles: Provides newborn essentials to families in financial need.  View details here.

Classroom Central: Provides school supplies to students living in poverty.  View details here.

Crisis Assistance Ministry:  Provides assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis, helping them move toward self-sufficiency.  View details here.

Hope Haven, Inc.:  Provides recovery for chemically dependent adults and families.  View details here.

Hospitality House of Charlotte:  Offers temporary lodging to families and patients being treated at local hospitals. View details here.

Southminster Retirement Home:  Volunteer opportunities for teens (15+) and adults to work with residents.  Music & Memory - create personalized playlists for residents; Pretty in Pink Cart- assist staff in pampering female residents with make-up, manicures; Daily Programming - play cards, lead a game of trivia, etc.;  Work in community garden. Parish Life Volunteer Opportunities

*Ongoing:   Coffee and Donut Volunteers (Sundays after 7:30, 9:00, and 10:45 am Masses)  Volunteers sign up in advance, choosing specific dates and Mass times.  Set up and clean up are simple, and this ministry is appropriate for everyone from singles to families with children, Scout troops, and teens who need serve hours. *Catechist:  Faith Formation Teachers & Assistants (Sundays: 1:45; 3:30; 6:30 and Wednesdays at 6:30).
Teach weekly Faith Formation classes to students. Training and materials are provided. Must be confirmed to teach.  Classes begin in September and end in May. Find details here or contact Trisha Stewart at tstewart@stgabrielchurch.org

1st Tuesday of the Month:  Shining Stars
Non-profit adult day respite program for people with early to moderate Alzheimer's Disease.  Help with games, social interaction and excerise. Volunteer needed to serve at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Contact Suzanne Bach at 704-335-0253.

Once a month: From the Heart Gift Shop
Volunteers needed to work one Sunday per month from the end of one Mass to the beginning of the next. Contact Theresa Anderson at tba1708@gmail.com.  (9:00 Sunday Masses have greatest need for volunteers.)

 On-going:  Words on the Wall at Mass
Volunteers are needed to administer the projector and laptop during weekend Masses.  Contact John Krasniewski at jkrasniewski@carolina.rr.com. 

*On-going:  Greeters                      
Arrive 20 minutes before Mass and welcome people as they arrive in the Narthex.  Volunteers especially needed for the 5:00 pm Masses on Saturday and Sunday.  Perfect for smiling faces of all ages.  View details and sign-up online here.

On-going:  Welcome Table Volunteers     Stay 15 minutes after Mass and staff the Welcome Table in the Narthex (answer visitors' questions and provide registration information to newcomers.) *On-going: Youth Ministry Opportunities

On-going:  Rosary Makers              
Meets Thursdays from 10:30 - noon in Ministry Center, Room D to make rosaries for missions around the world and for sick relative, friends and parish members.  Most of our work is done at home.  If you are homebound, we will bring you instructions and pick up completed rosaries.  Questions?  Call Betty or Paul Donovan at 704-817-8780 or pedonovan@icloud.com

On-going: Altar Society
Our parish  Altar Society needs you!   This ministry launders and irons the Communion purificators for the church, maintains the holy water fonts and cares for the Adoration Chapel.  Volunteers help once every 4 to 6 weeks on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings for about an hour.  For more information, contact Denise Murphy at 704-843-9660, or dmurphy@stgabrielchurch.org .

On-going:  Ushers
