*April 29:  Men's Uptown Homeless Shelter (last Friday of every month)
Prepare and serve dinner to residents at North Tryon Shelter.  Contact Wally Penilla at wpenilla@aol.com

*May 14: Habitat for Humanity
Help build homes.  Work available for all skill levels, no experience necessary.  Must be 15 years old. Other volunteer opportunities available serving lunches.  Contact Danny Kelly at atdkelly@kellymcardle.com

*May 21:  High School Venture Crew: 
Lake Wylie Riversweep Service Project

 May 21 and May 25 (3rd Saturday and fourth Wednesday of each month)  HOM Furniture Drive   
The Homemakers of Mercy helps the under-served move beyond or avoid homelessness.  Volunteer to help with furniture pickups on the 3rd Saturday of the month or help at the storage house and apartment setups on the 4th Wednesday of the month.  Contact 704-362-5047 x601 or HOMfurniture.donate@gmail.com‚Äč

June 24 - July 8:  Freedom School
Freedom School provides 6 weeks of summer literacy and character building programs and meals for disadvantaged children.  Program is held at the Oakhurst STEAM Academy on Monroe Rd.  Opportunities include:

  • Share a hobby/skill/passion with a class (great for those who speak Spanish). Contact Laura Hull  at ehull@carolina.rr.com
  • Spend 30 minutes reading to a group. Contact Chris Ryskiewich at cryskiewich@carolina.rr.com
    YOUTH AND TEENS CAN:
  • *Host a lemonade stand, bake sale, to help another child participate in Freedom School.
  • *Host a toy drive collection for new or used Legos or K'nex for program.  
  • *Assemble 3 weeks worth of appreciation tokens (notes, homemade desserts, etc) for 7 staff.  Contact Laura Hull at ehull@carolina.rr.com

*On-going:  Levine & Dickson Hospice House - Snack Collection
Help stock the pantry with nonperishable snacks for family members and patients.  Individually wrapped granola bars, trail mix, cookies, crackers, juice boxes, pretzels, are needed (preferably in bulk). Contact Meagan Quinlan at meagsgq@gmail.com

On-going: Friendship Trays                              Deliver meals to the homebound.  Individual drives one week-day per month at lunchtime, sometimes with a partner.  Substitute drivers are always needed.  Contact Carla Lewis at  cblewisnc@yahoo.com

Parish Life Volunteer Opportunities

*April 24 & May 22:  Teen Mass at 5:00 Mass
Teens needed to serve as Ministers of the Word, Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers, Gift Bearers and to help serve refreshments.  Sign up on-line here.

*May 15:  Welcome Brunch (after 9:00 Mass)
Volunteers needed to welcome and direct guests.  Volunteers also needed to staff the children's table and keep children busy during the brunch and presentations.  Great service opportunity for students. Contact Jean Carlino to volunteer.

*June 20 - 24:  Vacation Bible School
Assist with games, crafts, snacks, music for our VBS students (4 years - 5th grade) from 8:00 - 1:00.  High school teens and adults can volunteer.  Contact Christin Ackerman at http://sacker8472@aol.com

On-going:   Coffee and Donut Volunteers (Sundays after 7:30, 9:00, and 10:45 am Masses)  Volunteers sign up in advance, choosing specific dates and Mass times.  Set up and clean up are simple, and this ministry is appropriate for everyone from singles to families with children, Scout troops, and teens who need serve hours. 1st Tuesday of the Month:  Shining Stars
Non-profit adult day respite program for people with early to moderate Alzheimer's Disease.  Help with games, social interaction and excerise. Volunteer needed to serve at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Contact Suzanne Bach at 704-335-0253.

Once a month: From the Heart Gift Shop
Volunteers needed to work one Sunday per month from the end of one Mass to the beginning of the next. Contact Theresa Anderson at tba1708@gmail.com.  (9:00 Sunday Masses have greatest need for volunteers.)

 On-going:  Words on the Wall at Mass
Volunteers are needed to administer the projector and laptop during weekend Masses.  Contact John Krasniewski at jkrasniewski@carolina.rr.com. 

*On-going:  Greeters                      
Arrive 20 minutes before Mass and welcome people as they arrive in the Narthex.  Volunteers especially needed for the 5:00 pm Masses on Saturday and Sunday.  Perfect for smiling faces of all ages.  View details and sign-up online here.

On-going:  Welcome Table Volunteers     Stay 15 minutes after Mass and staff the Welcome Table in the Narthex (answer visitors' questions and provide registration information to newcomers.) *On-going: Youth Ministry Opportunities

On-going:  Rosary Makers              
Meets Thursdays from 10:30 - noon in Ministry Center, Room D to make rosaries for missions around the world and for sick relative, friends and parish members.  Most of our work is done at home.  If you are homebound, we will bring you instructions and pick up completed rosaries.  Questions?  Call Betty or Paul Donovan at 704-817-8780 or pedonovan@icloud.com

On-going: Altar Society
Our parish  Altar Society needs you!   This ministry launders and irons the Communion purificators for the church, maintains the holy water fonts and cares for the Adoration Chapel.  Volunteers help once every 4 to 6 weeks on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings for about an hour.  For more information, contact Denise Murphy at 704-843-9660, or dmurphy@stgabrielchurch.org .
